Pirates of Silicon Valley
Meeting with IBM

IBM representatives meet with Bill Gates and the rest of Microsoft to discuss building an operating system for IBM's hardware. Bill Gates decides to license the operating system to IBM rather than of selling it to retain ownership. Contrary to what is depicted in the clip, Gates initially referred IBM to Digital Research, makers of the CP/M operating system; however, the two companies did not reach a licensing agreement, so Microsoft ended up finding an acceptable operating system for IBM.
