If you are like us, this has probably happened to you.
0:03
There you are, sitting in your room, avoiding your homework,
0:06
scrolling through YouTube channels, wondering which video to watch next.
0:10
Oooh, there's Epic Rap Battles of History.
0:14
Wait, wait! Charlieissocoolike has a new video. Click it!
0:16
No, no! I saw the paint drying video, we are watching that one!
0:19
Paint dying?
0:20
Yeah. Trust me, just click it!
0:22
Suddenly, in the midst of your procrastination, your parents say something like...
0:26
Grace! Five more minutes, then you and your math friends gotta do your homework.
0:30
She's always on that internet.
0:32
Hmmm.
0:33
I swear those videos are going to rot her...
0:35
Ssshh. Real Housewives is on!
0:36
Okay, so now we've only got time to watch one more video!
0:38
Yeah, I think we should watch Tobuscus.
0:41
The Harrison Ford one! He angrily points at stuff.
0:45
Relax! Integers are gonna help us decide which video to watch
0:47
next.
0:54
That's right, if you are a regular YouTube viewer, like us,
0:56
you've been using integers to make shrewd viewing decisions.
0:59
Where are the integers?
1:00
Well. Underneath the play count, there's two numbers.
1:02
There's the positive votes.
1:04
Then there's the negative votes on the other side.
1:06
Those positive and negative votes, are positive and negative integers.
1:10
Youtube just didn't put the positive and negative signs, next to the numbers.
1:13
Yep, that's what integers are:
1:14
Whole numbers, like 1, 2 or the 38,000 we saw.
1:19
The negatives of whole numbers, like negative 1, negative 2,
1:22
negative 20 which we saw earlier, and then there's zero.
1:27
Integers are not fractions, decimals, or percents.
1:29
So numbers like one and six tenths, or negative two hundred percent,
1:32
or negative one thousandth, don't qualify.
1:35
Yes!
1:36
Just makes things a lot easier guys.
1:40
You remember that one time when you went to the mall,
1:42
with your friend Shauna, and you didn't have any money.
1:43
So, she lent you 50 bucks and you bought this really cute denim jacket?
1:48
But, owing your friend 50 bucks, that's a negative number,
1:53
one that I promise to pay back very shortly, Shauna.
1:59
Now that we have talked about integers,
2:01
let's see how we would write them down on a number line.
2:03
Positive numbers go to the right of zero.
2:05
You can write them with or without the positive sign, they mean the same thing.
2:08
3 is the same a positive 3, just don't call it plus 3, cause math teachers don't
2:14
like it, it's an operation.
2:16
Negative numbers go to the left of zero, and yes, that is a negative sign,
2:20
not a minus sign.
2:22
Seeing integers on a number line helps us understand the value
2:26
of one integer compared to another.
2:28
As we move to the right on the number line, numbers increase in value.
2:32
For instance, -5 has a greater value than -16.
2:36
But, if we move left on the number line, numbers decrease in value.
2:40
After all, would you rather watch a video with 20 thumbs downs,
2:43
or one with just 2 thumbs downs.
2:45
Are you talking about my paint drying video?
2:49
Maybe...
2:50
Okay, now that we have talked about value, let's ask a question:
2:55
Which integer has greater value, negative 5 or 4?
2:58
First we put negative 5 and 4 on the number line.
3:01
We see that four is farther to the right on the number line than negative five.
3:05
Let's place a positive sign in front of the four. That's a nice trick as well.
3:09
Still stuck? Think about two YouTube videos.
3:11
One has negative 5 votes, and one of them has 4 positive votes.
3:15
Which one would you choose?
3:17
Okay, so the answer is positive 4 has greater value than -5.
3:22
Pac Man loves positivity.
3:25
Okay, want to play around with positive and negative numbers?
3:29
Hit the thumbs up or thumbs down on our site.
3:32
And if you leave some comments, positive or negative,
3:34
they will be very much appreciated.
3:35
Oh yeah, one other thing: the next time your parents tell you...
3:36
"Grace, are you watching those YouTube videos again?!"
3:43
Just say.
3:44
Relax, I'm working with integers!
3:47
...And then go back to watching Math Club.
